Set amid a lavish orchid garden and intoxicatingly blue ocean views, the Plantation at Maulili pairs the romance of old Hawaii with the amenities one finds in a shiny new five-star hotel.

The private compound’s three villas, walled from the outside world like an emperor’s palace, each are available for $995 to $1,695 per night. A concierge is available to await your arrival and cater to your every whim, be it a call to chill the wine, hire a private chef to prepare a native-style outdoor barbecue or book a soothing midnight massage.

Furnished in a comfortable yet elegant style in keeping with the island’s casual atmosphere, the two-story villas feature two master suites, complete with two-and-a-half baths, outdoor spas, private pools, gourmet kitchens, TVs, VCRs, digital stereo systems, offices outfitted with DSL and fax lines and once-a-week maid service.

"It’s a peaceful, wonderful spot the whole family can enjoy," says Suzanne Caplan, who owns the compound along with her husband, Stan. "These are villas for all seasons; people are taken by the whole ambience. We use as many native elements as possible. Many of the accessories are from local antiques shops. The fruits in the complimentary basket are Hawaiian and even the soaps and lotions are made in Kauai. We miss it when we are not there."

All in all, the Plantation at Maulili is a private paradise set in a public place. Surrounded by the homes of year-round residents, it is but a short walk in sandals and shorts to many of the finest dining spots, including the Beach House restaurant, whose island hospitality and Pacific Rim cuisine are the talk of the island.

Whether you throw your cares away and cast your fishing rod into the water, take a dip in the shimmering pool, watch the sea turtles, dolphins and whales, curl up with a beach book on the lanai or go snorkeling at nearby Whalers Cove, you will be seduced by having the best of sunny Kauai, the Hawaiian island known for its lush green beauty, right in your own backyard.
