Best of Both Worlds
The stylish versatility of the Andromeda la Dea.
February 1, 2006
There are a variety of vessels that traverse the South Pacific, but perhaps none as luxurious as the Andromeda la Dea. This 154-foot ketch offers the charm of an Old World sailing vessel with the capabilities of a modern motor yacht.Built by renowned Italian boatbuilder Perini Navi in 1991 and chartered by Nigel Burgess, an international brokerage house dealing exclusively in large yachts, Andromeda la Dea spends most of her time in the Pacific and Caribbean—she has also circumnavigated the globe, visiting both the Arctic and the Antarctic. Tentatively this spring, the sleek yacht will be cruising the southwest Pacific, stopping at such exotic locales as Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Chuuk, the Marshall and Gilbert Islands and Samoa, before moving into the South Pacific to Tonga and Fiji for the summer. Andromeda, which accommodates eight guests comfortably, will then head down to the Great Barrier Reef in time for black marlin season.

She is more than prepared for such globetrotting. Thanks to two major updates (in 2000 and 2004, respectively), Andromeda la Dea is technologically and physically up to speed, and offers guests sumptuous interiors peppered with a thoughtful mix of luxuries. And if mellow is not your speed, Andromeda can cruise at 12 knots and is equipped with Jet Skis, water skis and laser sails.
In her first refit, the yacht received a new sail wardrobe, a complete update of the sail handling system, the installation of underwater lighting and a complete overhaul and/or replacement of all major operating systems. In 2004, her fly bridge was extended and a deluxe custom-designed spa tub was installed. Her navigation, communication, audio and video systems were replaced with state-of-the-art equipment, including on-board wireless Internet access. Interiors were refurbished using decadent materials such as onyx and sumptuous fabrics throughout—cabins are accented with handmade linens, towels and robes from Ferini in Florence, Italy.
On the fly bridge, guests can watch the sun set from the deluxe confines of the spa tub or from the spacious sunbathing and lounging areas. Nearby is a dining area that seats eight, a barbecue grill and a refreshment center. On the main deck, the large aft cockpit is the principal entertaining area, seating up to 18 (additionally, it has buffet capabilities for up to 30). In the main salon, up to 14 guests can enjoy an unobstructed view of the 50-inch Fujitsu plasma screen with surround sound. Satellite TV, video gaming and an underwater dolphin-cam are also accessible from here.
Despite the high-tech bells and whistles, Andromeda’s refits were done with great respect for the nautical history that spawned her. For many guests, traversing the seas in Signorina la Dea will feel akin to sailing in a grand old ship—only with better toys.
Rates start at $115,000 per week.
