A stone’s throw from Barney’s, Bergdorf’s and the fashion shows held in
Bryant Park, 485 Fifth Avenue promises to be the missing link for those who wish
to literally surround themselves with fashion. The 10-story prewar building
is being redesigned and updated with interiors by fashion designer Peter Som,
who worked for Bill Blass before launching his own line in 1999. His
clean lines and timeless aesthetic transition well into interiors. “I’m
of the philosophy that design is fluid,” explains the designer, who studied art
history at Connecticut College and fashion design at Parsons School of Design.
“My love of luxury extends not only to clothes but what surrounds me.
Architecture is a kind of clothing you live in.” Eighty-eight one- and
two-bedroom residences priced from $735,000 to $2 million will occupy the
first 10 floors. And a new four-story, contemporary glass structure with 16
penthouses priced from $3 million to $7 million will crown the building.
Som
handpicked everything from the glass tile and marble sinks in the bathrooms to
the lacquered cabinetry and quartz countertops in the kitchens, but
otherwise left each unit a blank canvas for buyers to decorate themselves. The
designer’s mark is most prevalent in the public areas. “I approached the
communal spaces as if I were designing a London gentlemen’s club. I wanted
people to feel enveloped in comfort as well as luxury,” says Som, whose parents
were both architects. “I didn’t want it to look like a generic boutique hotel or
for it to be tragically hip. You won’t see any faux Louis chairs here.” In the
lobby, Brazilian cherrywood alternates with navy blue embossed ostrich leather
for the wall panels. A three-story staircase grafted with a laser-cut metal
pattern based on a chrysanthemum print prevalent in Som’s spring 2006 collection
connects the lobby to the tranquillity garden and Visionaire’s Club, a private
residents’ club with screening room, wine cellar, fitness facilities and
business center. Other building amenities include a couture concierge to assist
with everything from dinner reservations to travel arrangements, and an
automated Crestron system in each unit.
