| Ralph Lauren Home’s new Desert Hills collection channels the American West. |
|
If anyone can infuse classic Western aesthetics into furniture without creating
pieces that look like castoffs from a John Wayne movie, it is Ralph Lauren.
Fashion’s most fervent champion of classic American style has introduced the
Desert Hills collection through Ralph Lauren Home: a line of chairs, tables,
accessories and bedroom furnishings. “The desert’s natural beauty was the
inspiration for the collection; its rugged textures, organic lines and its
muted, tonal palette,” says Lauren. “I also drew on the West for patterns and
materials.”

The rustic Joshua Tree dining table (left, $10,000) brings a
modicum of Western style into the home without necessitating a call to the
decorator. Its rugged shape and finely sanded wood top—a 3-inch slice of ancient
timber from the African zebrano tree—are as at-home in a formal setting as they
are in casual environs. Blackened steel legs, inspired by mid-century modern
decor, are juxtaposed with the organic-style tabletop.
“I can see the table
living in many different environments,” says Lauren. “We’ve set it with
turquoise and burnished bronze pottery, hammered silver and hand-tooled leather;
I have also shown it in a more minimalist, serene setting—with woven raffia and
rattan and white-speckled glass.” (Cick image to enlarge)
The collection’s whimsical tree stumps
(above), designed as occasional tables, add Tolkienesque panache to the dining
experience when used as accompanying chairs. The one-of-a-kind hand-polished
stumps (price upon request) are available in oiled cedar, juniper, oak and
walnut.
