Protecting your baubles is a crucial part of owning them, but it is more than a little bit
ironic that most jewelry connoisseurs store even the shiniest of assets in dull,
dark safes. Those lackluster hiding spots are precisely what prompted Dominik
Ribbentrop to acquire Stockinger Safes—a 30-year-old German company whose safes
are as lustrous and eye-catching as the items they often protect. "The
difference is like a very exclusive, expensive Swiss Patek Philippe watch and a
$30 novelty watch," explains Ribbentrop, who purchased the company four years
ago. "At the end of the day, they both give you the time and date, but only one
has style and design and makes you feel good."

Crafted in Bavaria, Stockinger safes are first and foremost
secure—the safes have never once been broken into. Manufactured to rigorous
safety regulations, they have a VDS rating of IV (the scale goes up to VIII, but
anything V and above usually applies to bank vaults). Each safe features a
silent alarm, several bolting mechanisms and a James Bond–like electronic lock
that appears when the company’s logo is pushed. And to limit the number of
people with access to its safes, Stockinger uses its own trained professionals
for every aspect of the design and installation process.

The company offers five standard sizes (priced from $30,000 to
$130,000), ranging from the 26-inch-tall Cube to the 74-inch-tall Magna, all of
which can be customized with options such as solid gold handles, infinite color
combinations and limitless interior configurations. As every safe is a bespoke
creation, the structures become canvases for true works of art.
For more extensive collections, Stockinger also offers the
option of creating completely customized safes. For these, the company will go
so far as to measure entire jewelry collections and craft separate drawers for
each piece. "We recently finished a two-door safe with 60 watch winders and room
for 200 watches," says Ribbentrop. "And a woman outside Frankfurt had jewelry
worth €12 million, so we created separate drawers for 30 watches, 80 rings and
15 necklaces—plus room to grow."

No matter which safe is chosen, customers can also select the
exterior finish. Choices range from bright lacquers and metallics to
hand-painted wood grains, which may, ironically, turn the safe into the most
gorgeous piece in the room.
