A Sense of Belongings
[Homeowners]
Chic shopping on Turks and Caicos.

With a string of high-end developments going up on Turks and Caicos (see Robb Report Vacation Homes, Summer 2005), buying real estate is a snap. However, furnishing your Caribbean island idyll there typically involved much long-distance shipping and waiting.

Enter architects Eric Rosenberg and Michele Kolb, who have joined with designer and local resident Michael Fenimore to launch Belongings, an island-inspired showroom. The store, located on the island of Providenciales, carries an array of luxury home furnishings, textiles and accessories.

Fenimore, Rosenberg and Kolb decided upon their new business venture shortly after completing work on the Somerset, the most recent oceanfront resort to open in the Grace Bay area. “The lifestyle out here is casual,” says Kolb. “It’s barefoot living, but still very high end. Our collection is geared to the ease and comfort level of the island and its residents. They want classic, simple and beautiful things to complement their homes.”

The three hope to capture the tranquil beach lifestyle and bring it to their showroom. “We’ve put together a unique collection of objects and furnishings that re-sponds to the casual elegance of island living,” notes Kolb. “We have pieces from around the globe, and the collection is always changing because most of the furnishings are one of a kind and handmade.” Solid wood beds, tables and carved-back chairs as well as bedspreads, molten-glass chargers and hand-beaded placemats from India are currently in stock. Amid the scented candles and eclectic tableware are watercolors of aquatic life painted on gold-leaf panels. Like the light fixtures, the fabrics and ceramics are all inspired by the exceptional diving in local waters as well as by the island’s surroundings. “People want nice furnishings on hand and are ready to buy,” says Kolb. “They want something unique for their home other than the standard bamboo or wicker, and the island couldn’t provide these until now.”
